" aguas argentinas " palace facade at midday , buenos aires , argentina . before , it was called : " aguas corrientes " palace . located between cordoba avenue and riobamba , viamonte and ayacucho , the palace is one of the most beautiful buildings in the city of buenos aires… the project was carried out by the swiss designer carlos nystomeyer and the norwegian designer olaf boye and was joined by the english construction company bateman parsons and bateman . work began in 1887 and the buildings purpose was to address the health needs of a city overtaken by epidemics . it was envisioned to be a big tank that would collect water , covered by a very colorful tile palace . the twelve metal tanks have a capacity to store 72 million liters of water . the tanks were filled via pumps in recoleta located in a building where the museum of fine arts s currently located . the style of the palace—the ocher and blue green color tones—is similar to the styles of the second empire . the tiles were colorful and made from terracotta made in england and delivered in boxes where they were organized according to number in order to ease their laying . they used 170 , 000 tiles as well as more than 130 , 000 enamel bricks . in order to demonstrate national unity , they hung the coat of arms of the fourteen provinces and the capital which at that time made up the republic of argentina . construction ended in 1894 and since 1987 it has been a national historical monument . stock photo
